Driving east, out of Guildford, Jon wiped some stubborn sleep from his eye as they moved through the Surrey countryside towards Horsley and another day’s work on the SIU. So far, from what he could tell, the killer had not struck again. There’d been no messages from the night shift, and no reports on the news this morning over breakfast.

Jon counted his blessings about that. No one else deserved to suffer the same fate that Jess had. He only hoped that they found the killer before he managed to strike again.

“You look tired,” Kate said, leaning back in her seat beside him and fixing him with a keen stare. He felt like he was being examined. But it was true, he was tired. His mind had been going over the facts of the case all night, over and over, trying to see if there was another angle on it. They’d not exhausted their lines of enquiry yet, though.

But that wasn’t the only thing that had kept him awake.

“Yeah, that’s because I am. Didn’t sleep well at all.”

“Why not?”

“I just couldn’t turn my brain off,” he explained.

“The case?”

“Yeah, other stuff too.”

“Like what?”

Feeling unsure about how to approach this, he didn’t want to offend her or scare her off, but he also wanted to know more. He wanted to know what she was thinking and where her head was at.

“Oh, a few things, but…”

“But, what?” He could hear the curiosity in her voice.

“Well, I was wondering if you were serious about wanting to move in with me?”

“Oh,” she replied, surprised. “Really? You were thinking about that?”

“Yeah, and police stuff too. So, not just that. I hope you don’t mind me asking?”

“No, I don’t mind.”

“So, what do you think?”

“I don’t know, really. I mean, the thought had crossed my mind, but I’ve been a little distracted by the case.”

“Yeah. Me too.”

“I guess, I suppose, I am interested. But I was joking when I mentioned it yesterday morning. I wasn’t being serious.”

“I guessed,” Jon answered. He’d realised that, but he felt sure that she wouldn’t have mentioned it if it hadn’t been on her mind, at least in a small way. Maybe he was wrong, but he took that joke to mean something.

“I need to have a think about it,” she replied. “It would mean me selling my place.”

“It would.”

“I don’t know. I’m not sure I have the headspace to deal with that today, while all this stuff at work is going on. Can you let me think on it for a while, and I’m not saying no.”

“Of course, that’s fine. No rush.”

“I mean, I like the idea. I do. I love you, Jon. But that would be a big step, and it’s not something I’d want to rush into without putting some serious thought into it. Also, are you sure you’re ready?”

Jon shrugged. “I dunno. I think, yeah, maybe. I think so.”

“Alright then. Leave it with me.”

Jon gave her a nod. “Okay.”

Kate fell silent after that, so to fill the void, Jon turned the radio on as he pushed through the wintery scenes that slid by all around them.
