Driving east, out of Guildford, Jon wiped some stubborn sleep from his eye as they moved through the Surrey countryside towards Horsley and another dayâs work on the SIU. So far, from what he could tell, the killer had not struck again. Thereâd been no messages from the night shift, and no reports on the news this morning over breakfast.
Jon counted his blessings about that. No one else deserved to suffer the same fate that Jess had. He only hoped that they found the killer before he managed to strike again.
âYou look tired,â Kate said, leaning back in her seat beside him and fixing him with a keen stare. He felt like he was being examined. But it was true, he was tired. His mind had been going over the facts of the case all night, over and over, trying to see if there was another angle on it. Theyâd not exhausted their lines of enquiry yet, though.
But that wasnât the only thing that had kept him awake.
âYeah, thatâs because I am. Didnât sleep well at all.â
âWhy not?â
âI just couldnât turn my brain off,â he explained.
âThe case?â
âYeah, other stuff too.â
âLike what?â
Feeling unsure about how to approach this, he didnât want to offend her or scare her off, but he also wanted to know more. He wanted to know what she was thinking and where her head was at.
âOh, a few things, butâ¦â
âBut, what?â He could hear the curiosity in her voice.
âWell, I was wondering if you were serious about wanting to move in with me?â
âOh,â she replied, surprised. âReally? You were thinking about that?â
âYeah, and police stuff too. So, not just that. I hope you donât mind me asking?â
âNo, I donât mind.â
âSo, what do you think?â
âI donât know, really. I mean, the thought had crossed my mind, but Iâve been a little distracted by the case.â
âYeah. Me too.â
âI guess, I suppose, I am interested. But I was joking when I mentioned it yesterday morning. I wasnât being serious.â
âI guessed,â Jon answered. Heâd realised that, but he felt sure that she wouldnât have mentioned it if it hadnât been on her mind, at least in a small way. Maybe he was wrong, but he took that joke to mean something.
âI need to have a think about it,â she replied. âIt would mean me selling my place.â
âIt would.â
âI donât know. Iâm not sure I have the headspace to deal with that today, while all this stuff at work is going on. Can you let me think on it for a while, and Iâm not saying no.â
âOf course, thatâs fine. No rush.â
âI mean, I like the idea. I do. I love you, Jon. But that would be a big step, and itâs not something Iâd want to rush into without putting some serious thought into it. Also, are you sure youâre ready?â
Jon shrugged. âI dunno. I think, yeah, maybe. I think so.â
âAlright then. Leave it with me.â
Jon gave her a nod. âOkay.â
Kate fell silent after that, so to fill the void, Jon turned the radio on as he pushed through the wintery scenes that slid by all around them.
